HOW TO CREATE YOUR OWN AROMATHERAPY SELF-CARE PRODUCTS IN 30 MINUTES OR LESS!
I love sharing information that helps my clients and readers create little rituals that keep their skin glowing and hearts happy. Here is my latest article on “Sixty and Me” I created these product formulas while travelling in my early 40’s but I still use them to this day when I don’t want to take too many products. Travelling light is my go to so here we go….
Let’s have some fun in our kitchens this week making aromatherapy self-care products. You can add fresh or dried botanicals to your creations which make them prettier and more potent. I love creating handmade formulas when I travel as I travel with minimum luggage. Here is one of my favourite formulas I created while visiting Florida, I called it My Sunshine Scrub.
My Sunshine Scrub Formula
Here are the ingredients and to make it.
Ingredients
1/2 fresh Florida orange or 10 drops of Sweet Orange Essential oil
1/4 cup of cane sugar
2 tablespoons of coconut oil, melted
A small non-glass bowl or jar
Directions
Squeeze the juice from the orange into the bowl, or alternatively, add 10 drops of Sweet Orange Essential oil.
Add the melted coconut oil.
Pour the sugar in and mix with a small spatula. Add more sugar if too liquid.
Add top to jar or cover with wrap.
Store in fridge to solidify, about 2 hours.
Product Facts
This product can be used on the face, scalp or all over the body. Face and hands especially do well with the Sunshine Scrub.
*Please be careful using in the bath tub as oil makes your shower floor or tub slippery. I like using it on my hands after gardening.
How to Use It
I love using this scrub in the shower and bath. Here is my ritual:
Shower first then shave my legs. I turn off the water and scoop up a good amount of Sunshine Scrub in the palm of my hand and press into the skin of my shins and scrub in gentle circular motion all over the bottom of my legs, front and back, until sugar dissolves. You can add water to your hands if it feels too sticky. I then proceed to the upper legs doing one at a time, then belly, arms, chest, neck and face. Once a month or so I do this on my scalp, too.
When finished, I rinse off thoroughly, shampoo my hair and condition. Finally, I pat dry with a towel and enjoy my silky smooth skin! This all natural scrub is so gorgeous. If you are travelling, simply use packets of sugar and your cleanser or moisturizer.
If you love the idea of this natural scrub and don’t want the mess of making it, you can buy my multi-award-winning Blueberry Bliss Sugar Scrub. It is food grade and 100% natural.
Botanicals You Can Use to Make Your Scrub More Potent (Use Sparingly)
Peppermint Leaves
Moringa powder
Tea leaves (steeped)
Fresh perked coffee grounds
Turmeric powder or fresh grated turmeric
Evening Massage Oil
Here is another homemade formula I love to create for winter as I love sealing in moisture after taking a bath or shower.
Mix 1 teaspoon of Sweet Orange Essential oil with 1/2 cup of melted Coconut oil. You can use Olive, grapeseed, or any cooking oil. I really like Coconut because it becomes a solid product and you can put it in your carry-on.
Good to Know
Our skin gets much more sensitive as we age, it needs extra hydration and that is easiest done with rich oils and exfoliating products that remove dry skin. Reapplying oils after an exfoliating treatment which is what this scrub is, is really important.
Moisturized skin improves the skin’s ability to protect us, which is the skin’s primary function.
These homemade products are safe for all skin types. They are great for dry, dehydrated, mature, and problematic skin. If you are sensitive to orange, substitute it for something else, like lavender, calendula or chamomile oil.
I’ve been formulating natural skincare for over 20 years, and I love it when I can improve someone’s skin instantly! As an esthetician and teacher, I believe it is important to share information that helps us create self-care rituals that improve our daily lives.
Let’s Start a Conversation:
Have you ever created your own skincare products? What do you like most about the mixing process? Have you ever had a sensitivity reaction to a particular ingredient?
